— CONTEXT

THREE WOMAN, ONE WAR, FAR FROM HOME.

"Ver van Thuis" (Far from Home) is a Dutch documentary made in collaboration with Urban Living Lab Breda. It tells the stories of three women who fled the war in Ukraine and found their way into the Netherlands and Belgium, leaving behind homes, families, and a country still under conflict.

The film is built around their perspective: how they experience the ongoing war back home, and what it has meant for their lives since leaving. Rather than treating the conflict as a distant headline, the documentary keeps its focus close to the people actually living through its consequences — the disruption, the loss, and the process of rebuilding somewhere unfamiliar. The intent behind it was as much social as it was creative: raising awareness within the local community in Breda, and encouraging continued support for the refugee cause at a time when public attention to the war risked fading.

— DESCRIPTION

BEHIND THE CAMERA AND IN THE EDIT.

The documentary was produced together with two other producers. This was the second documentary production for us. Between the three of us, we shared direction, planning, and the scheduling of every meeting and interview needed to bring the stories together. My own role sat primarily in directing, camera work, and editing — shaping how each woman's story was filmed and structured into the final cut.

At the stakeholder's request, the project was structured as two separate episodes rather than a single film, allowing each part to breathe and giving the three stories room to be told without rushing them into one runtime.

The documentary had its own first screening at the company's headquarters, followed by an official premiere at Breda's Chassé Theater. From there, it continued to screen at several more venues and events over the following months, extending its reach well beyond that first premiere.
